The Nehemiah Corporation of America and the Sacramento CARES Mentoring Movement will join together at the Capital City BLACK EXPO 2010 to address solutions for developing human potential and creating leadership opportunities within the African American community.

The event will occur Friday, February 19 at 1:00 p.m., during BLACK EXPO at the Sacramento Convention Center.

Susan L. Taylor, Founder and CEO of The National CARES Mentoring Movement and former Editor-In-Chief of Essence Magazine, will make a special appearance at the event. Ms. Taylor will also recognize the innovative partnership between CARES and the Nehemiah Emerging Leaders Program, organized to develop high-quality African American leaders.

The Emerging Leaders program is new in Sacramento, but growing fast.

Scott Syphax, President and CEO of Nehemiah Corporation of America, is one of the founders of the program.

“In order to raise the quality of life in the Black community, we must develop young leaders,” said Syphax.

Encouraging mentors is a key element to accomplishing the program’s goals, said Syphax.

“Great leaders learn from other leaders, often in the form of mentoring and concentrated professional training,” he added.

The purpose of Ms. Taylor’s National CARES Mentoring Movement is to end the state of emergency in Black America by connecting caring adults to mentoring opportunities within their community.

CARES Circles are networks of concerned, committed organizations that recruit family members, friends and colleagues to mentor the vulnerable young and help secure their future.

The Sacramento CARES Circle partners include the following: the 100 Black Men, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Black Advocates in State Service (BASS), NAACP, UCAN, BWOPA, Urban Fatherhood, Daddy Hunger, Green Tech Academy, Kappa, Alpha Psi Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, 100 Black Women, Oak Park Methodist Church, City of Sacramento, California Black Chamber of Commerce and additional partner organizations.

During her appearance at BLACK EXPO, Ms. Taylor will expand on the objectives of the CARES Mentoring Movement.
